Saigon has had no durian season, many "followers" have started ordering to enjoy. Durian is a fruit with a very attractive taste, the "king of fruits" as presented by Sing, Ma, and Thai friends.
In the past, I have heard many times from patients that they are "banned" from eating durian when they have diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and high blood pressure because they heard that eating it makes their disease worse. In fact, being too extreme in the diet does not necessarily bring good control for health. Helping patients live happy, healthy life also includes helping them feel comfortable in their daily routine. Because like all other foods, using the right amount will help us take advantage of the benefits of this fruit.
1. Durian contains fat but unsaturated fat
- This fat is beneficial, helps increase "good" cholesterol, so eating durian really does not cause hyperlipidemia. However, in terms of fat density, a small durian can contain a large amount of fat, so it is easy to eat a lot of calories without realizing it. This is the reason for weight gain when eating a lot of durians
2. Durian contains a lot of sugar
Temporarily calling a durian segment is the flesh surrounding a seed. With 3 such packs, the amount of sugar-loaded is equivalent to half a can of coke or a full cup of white rice. Therefore, if you have eaten durian, you should consider reducing other starchy and sugary foods.
3. Durian contains a lot of potassium
Potassium helps to control blood pressure quite well. However, caution should be exercised if you have kidney disease or are taking medications with potassium-sparing properties.
A healthy person can take 3 durian packs/day to supplement the above substances as well as fiber, iron, and antioxidants. For people with diabetes, chronic kidney disease, it is recommended to limit 1-2 packs/day and it is very important to consult an endocrinologist about your condition. If your doctor is struggling to adjust the dose of your diabetes medication, you should temporarily limit it. However, if you eat according to the above recommendations but the sugar still increases, the weight is still up, do not rush to condemn durian but need to see if there are other "culprits" or not!
