EARLY SCREENING - "THE GOLDEN KEY" REDUCING THE CONCERN OF COLORECTAL CANCER

A PhD professionally advises this article. Nguyen Huy Bang - Department of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at CarePlus International Clinics.

Colorectal cancer ranks third among the most common cancers globally and fourth in Vietnam. In the early stages, the disease progresses silently and almost without any symptoms, making it very difficult to detect. Therefore, early screening is essential in the treatment and prevention of the development of colorectal cancer.

Screening tests help to detect abnormalities, precancerous lesions, or polyps within the colon when patients do not have any symptoms. This significantly improves survival chances, shortens treatment time, enhances quality of life, and reduces the psychological and economic burden on patients.

So, who needs early screening for colorectal cancer?

Average-risk individuals: Those aged 40 and above

High-risk individuals:

  • Hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes: According to statistics in the United States, about 5% of colorectal cancers are caused by genetic factors. Over 85% of patients with high-risk genetic syndromes develop colorectal cancer. These syndromes include Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP), Hereditary Nonpolyposis Colorectal Cancer (HNPCC), or Lynch syndrome.

  • Personal or family history of colorectal cancer or advanced adenomatous polyps:

  • One close relative diagnosed with these diseases before the age of 60 (parents, siblings, etc.)

  • Two close relatives diagnosed with these diseases at any age

  • Personal history of chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (e.g., ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease).

According to the recommendations of the United States, individuals with risk factors should undergo colonoscopy screening every 5 years to screen for colorectal cancer.

Colonoscopy at CarePlus is a one-step, efficient, and thorough screening method. Not only does it detect precancerous lesions and early-stage cancer, but it also helps identify and remove polyps, thus reducing the incidence and mortality rate of colorectal cancer.

Additionally, colonoscopy has the highest sensitivity in detecting colorectal cancer and colon polyps. This method allows for the removal of lesions from any location within the colon during the same procedure, as well as the detection and removal of polyps before they become malignant.

Colorectal Cancer - The right screening time and methods
Colon cancer is a common disease, accounting for a high rate in the world and in Vietnam. Screening means looking for abnormalities, precancerous lesions or polyps in the colon when the patient does not have any symptoms. Detecting colorectal cancer before symptoms appear significantly improves the chances of survival and reduces the psychological, economic, and social burden.
