What is Osteopathy?

A manual approach, non invasive and drug free, based on the fact that every mechanical disturbance of the body (alteration of the mobility of the bones or viscera) leads to consequences for its general functioning. The manipulation of the body by the practitioner favours self-cure.

    • The osteopathic physician will discuss the patient’s health problems, listen, and take case notes

    • Assessment of the whole body using skilled palpation to find mobility losses which correspond with the symptoms
    • The patient may need to remove some clothing to carry out the diagnosis. Patient privacy should be res- pected during this process
    • The osteopathic physician will propose a treatment plan to meet the patient’s needs
    • Manual treatment using different gentle technics :
      • Manipulation
      • Mobilisations
      • Myofascial 
      • Visceral 
      • Craniosacral
    • Treatment aims to positively affect the body’s nervous, circulatory, and lymphatic systems in order to restore the mobility and function to the affected structure
    • Osteopathy emphasizes self-healing, so an osteopathic physician may also advise dietary changes, home exercise programs, and lifestyle adjustments
    • The manipulation and hands-on work are gentle, but due to the physical work being carried out, a patient of osteopathy may feel sore for the first 24 to 48 hour
    • Treatment plan
      • 1 week minimum between 2 consultations
      • Most of the time 2 or 3 consultations
      • Follow-up can be longer for chronic trouble
    • This will include the number of sessions likely to be needed, although this number may change depen- ding on the patient’s response to treatment
    • No drug prescription
