Respiratory diseases, especially asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), are chronic diseases that cause major global health, social and economic burdens, with the rate of morbidity and mortality showing no signs of decrease, despite continued development of treatment.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), COPD will become the third leading cause of death worldwide, surpassing the death toll of HIV/AIDS and lung cancer by 2020. Studies show that, although it is estimated that more than 4.2% of the population suffers from COPD, it is alarming that most of them are still undiagnosed due to the lack of awareness, the restriction on the expertise of public health, even among a population of health practitioners.

It is estimated that more than 300 million people suffer from asthma with the highest death toll. Although asthma and COPD cause heaviest burdens, with poor diagnostic and control rates, these two diseases have not received proper attention as chronic disease that require long-term outpatient management.
