1.What is cirrhosis?

Cirrhosis is a liver that forms many scar tissue caused by many forms of liver disease (hepatitis, fatty liver, and chronic alcoholism). As the scar tissue develops, the liver tries to heal itself by making new cells. The more new cells are created, the greater the risk of mutations, creating tumors, causing the liver to gradually lose its function.

2. The causes of the disease

There are many causes of cirrhosis, including the following:

  • Due to hepatitis B, C, D

  • Due to alcohol

  • Due to an autoimmune disease (the body's immune system attacks the liver)

  • Metabolic disorders

According to statistics, about 20% of people infected with viral hepatitis have the ability to complications into cirrhosis; alcoholic cirrhosis second only to viral hepatitis; cirrhosis due to fatty liver.

There are also a number of other causes that cause cirrhosis such as schistosomiasis, liver fluke, cirrhosis due to splenomegaly (due to malaria, or by the spleen of unknown cause)

3. The stages of the disease

Cirrhosis of the liver is divided into 4 levels including:

  • Grade 1: the liver begins to inflammation and scarring, the damage is not significant and can be restored.

  • Grade 2: scar tissue appears more, portal hypertension, liver begins to damage more.

  • Grade 3: fibrous tissue appears much in the liver, fatigue, pallor, anemia, liver pain, severely impaired liver function ...

  • Grade 4: most serious because fibrous tissue has completely replaced liver cells, leading to severe liver failure, manifested by ascites cirrhosis, weight loss, anemia, severe jaundice ...

In particular, the early stages of the disease often have no specific and obvious symptoms. Failure to do regular health screening can lead to dangerous complications.

4. How to prevent cirrhosis?

To prevent cirrhosis, it is necessary to actively protect its liver in the following ways:

  • Hepatitis B vaccine for children and adults who are not yet sick.

  • Have a healthy lifestyle, do not abuse alcohol.

  • Avoid eating raw foods, eat cooked and cooked food so as not to be infected with parasites.

  • Use clean food, ensure food safety to prevent contamination with harmful chemicals and pigments that cause liver damage.

  • Do not use drugs that affect the liver.

  • People who have had chronic hepatitis B or C need regular follow-up every 3 months or 6 months to detect and early treat advanced hepatitis cases, to limit serious complications such as fibrosis. liver and liver cancer.

  • Periodic health examination to detect and early treat diseases causing hepatitis due to other causes such as heart failure, biliary obstruction ...

How the disease progresses depends on diet, living regime, working regime as well as the prevention of other infections.
