What to do before planning to get pregnant?

Pregnancy is a matter of both wife and husband. Therefore, before planning to get pregnant, the couple should plan together to change habits, live a healthy life, support each other mentally, and share the burden of work to have a smart and healthy baby. 

NUTRITION

Supplement vitamins and minerals:

  • Folic Acid 400 micrograms (0.4 milligrams) per day: reduces the risk of congenital neural tube defects such as spinal splitting. If there is a family history of neural tube defects, increase the dose of folic acid by 10 times. Folic acid is found in leaves, dark green vegetables, citrus fruits, lemons, legumes, whole grains, etc. 
  • Calcium at least 1000 mg/day: found in natural sources such as low-fat yogurt, cheese, milk, etc.
  • Vitamin D 10 micrograms/day: in fatty fish, eggs, cereals, mostly synthesized when the skin is exposed to the sun
  • Zinc (zinc) 15 mg/day: found in clams, seafood is a component that makes semen and testosterone in men, supports ovulation and conception in women.
  • Iron: Not routinely recommended but supplementation on a low rate is ok. 
  • Vitamin C: helps enhance iron absorption.

MAINTAIN HEALTHY HABITS

  • Do exercise
  • Reading, relaxing (music, yoga, meditation ...)
  • Record your menstrual cycle
  • Get enough sleep
  • Healthy eating
  • Maintain an ideal weight

AVOID THOSE THINGS

  • Stress
  • Smoking: low birth weight, preterm child
  • Drink alcohol
  • Substance abuse
  • Dangerous chemicals: pesticides, some beauty chemicals like hair dyes or cosmetics
  • Medicines for the treatment and medical procedures should be carefully considered
  • Excess Vitamin A: liver products, red, yellow fruits, etc.
  • Some types of fish: catfish, tuna, mackerel, tilapia, etc.
  • Herbs are not approved by the FDA
  • Caffeine: 200-300 milligrams/day, reduces fertility by 27%, reduces iron and calcium absorption.
  • Tea: reduced iron absorption
