Cervical cancer is the second most common disease in women worldwide. Over 95% of cervical cancers are found to be caused by the HPV virus. Currently, there is no specific treatment for this disease, so the only way to reduce the incidence of this disease is to get vaccinated.
There are currently 2 types of HPV vaccines:
The best time to get the HPV vaccine is before you have sexual activity. That’s why the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. CDC) recommends getting this vaccine at age 11 or 12, or as early as possible starting at age 9. In Vietnam, the HPV vaccine as recommended by the vaccine manufacturer is showed for women between the ages of 9 and 26.
However, married or sexually active women should STDll get the HPV vaccine for three reasons:
1. People who have sex are not infected with HPV, so vaccination can STDll completely protect women from diseases caused by vaccine-prevented HPV strains.
2. There are many strains of HPV vaccine (currently scientists have recorded more than 170 strains of HPV). Therefore, sexually active people can get 1-2 of these HPV strains, but not all of them, so vaccination will help prevent high-risk HPV strains that cause cervical cancer (strains 16, 18)) and other dangerous diseases such as warts, genital warts,. (strains 6, 11)
3. HPV virus is very contagious and re-infected. The body’s immunity after natural infection is not enough to prevent reinfection, but vaccines can.
