UNEXPLAINED ITCHING – A HIDDEN WARNING SIGN YOU SHOULDN’T IGNORE!

UNEXPLAINED ITCHING – A HIDDEN WARNING SIGN YOU SHOULDN’T IGNORE!

🚨 UNEXPLAINED ITCHING – A HIDDEN WARNING SIGN YOU SHOULDN’T IGNORE!

Most of us have experienced some form of itching—whether it’s from a mosquito bite or dry skin caused by weather. But when the itch lingers, disrupts your sleep, work, or daily life—it’s no longer just a minor annoyance!

Itching isn’t always just a skin-deep issue. Sometimes, it’s your body’s way of signaling a deeper, underlying problem.

Join Dr. Nguyen Doan Quynh, Dermatology Specialist, as we decode the hidden causes behind this deceptively simple symptom.

1. When the Problem Lies on the Skin

The most common causes of itching often stem from skin conditions themselves:

🔸 Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema): A chronic skin condition, especially common in children. Intense itching leads to scratching, skin thickening, and darkening—known as lichenification.
🔸 Psoriasis: A chronic inflammatory skin disorder with red, scaly patches and persistent itch, prone to flare-ups.
🔸 Hives (Urticaria): Sudden itchy red welts that usually fade within hours but often recur.
🔸 Other Causes: Cosmetic allergies, insect bites, fungal or parasitic infections can all be culprits affecting the skin.

2. When Skin Reflects Internal Disease

If your skin looks normal but still itches—beware of the following internal causes:

🔸 Kidney Disease: Whole-body itching is a hallmark symptom of chronic kidney failure due to toxin buildup.
🔸 Liver & Bile Disorders: Itching on palms and soles without skin lesions could indicate bile flow obstruction.
🔸 Thyroid Disorders:
– Hyperthyroidism: Itching with sweating, rapid heartbeat, and weight loss.
– Hypothyroidism: Dry, itchy skin with fatigue, weight gain, and drowsiness.
🔸 Other Conditions:
– Diabetes: Dry skin, frequent infections, and stubborn itching.
– Anemia or Lymphoma: Persistent, generalized itching that’s difficult to control.

3. Neurological & Psychological Triggers

🔸 Neuropathic Itch: Can follow nerve damage (e.g., after shingles). Even when the skin heals, faulty nerve signals may still trigger an itch.
🔸 Psychogenic Itch: Stress, anxiety, or depression can stimulate the release of stress hormones—fueling a chronic itch-scratch cycle that links mental health with dermatological symptoms.

4. Special Cases: Pregnant Women & Children

👩 Pregnant Women: Some skin conditions appear only during pregnancy or postpartum—like pemphigoid gestationis, PUPPP, and intrahepatic cholestasis—all associated with itching.
👶 Children: The most common cause is eczema, but impetigo and scabies—highly contagious in schools—are also frequent offenders.

5. When Should You See a Doctor?

Seek medical help if you experience:

❗ Itching lasting more than 2 weeks
❗ Generalized itching with no clear cause
❗ Itching with fever or unexplained weight loss (possible lymphoma)
❗ Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine (possible liver disease)
❗ Fatigue, swelling, or urinary changes (possible kidney disease)
❗ Excessive thirst, frequent urination, weight loss (possible diabetes)
❗ Itching during pregnancy (may signal intrahepatic cholestasis)

🎙️ Advice from Dr. Nguyen Doan Quynh – Dermatology Specialist at CarePlus Clinics:

“Itching is your body’s special way of communicating. While it may sometimes be a simple skin reaction, it could also signal a more serious internal condition. Don’t brush it off. When itching becomes persistent or unusual, consult a doctor promptly—for a healthier you, inside and out.”
