Open-heart valve disease: early symptoms and treatment

Open-heart valve disease is very common, having many effects on heart function as well as health. Therefore, even mild valve regurgitation also needs early screening and treatment.

Open-heart valve disease: early symptoms and treatment

10/17/2019 2:52:38 PM

Valve failure, also known as valve failure, is a condition that can occur in any age or gender. On the onset, the disease has few or no symptoms, making it difficult to recognize. In the severe form, the symptoms are more pronounced, causing more effects on cardiovascular performance and health. So, what is open heart valve disease? Symptoms to identify, treat and prevent the disease at the earliest.

1. What is open-heart valve disease?

Valve opening is a heart disease that occurs when the heart's valves don't close tightly, leading to blood flow backwards during valve closure. Therefore, the heart has to work harder to compensate for the blood volume depleted by reflux. Working heart "overload" is the cause of many dangerous diseases such as edema, arrhythmia, heart failure.

2. How many types of open heart valve disease?

The normal single-heart structure consists of four heart valves: the mitral valve, the tricuspid valve, the aortic valve, and the pulmonary valve. Specifically:

  • The tricuspid valve separates the right ventricle and the right atrium.

  • The mitral valve separates the left ventricle and the left atrium.

  • The pulmonary valve separates the right ventricle from the pulmonary artery.

  • The aortic valve separates the left ventricle from the aorta.

Each heart valve has a different function, only closing when the blood has pumped out of the heart's chamber.

Open-heart valve disease includes four types:

  • A mitral regurgitation: blood backs up in the left atrium.

  • Tricuspid valve leaking: blood backs up in the right atrial chamber.

  • Aortic valve leaking: blood backs up to the left ventricle.

  • Pulmonary valve regurgitation: blood backs up to the right ventricle.

3. Valvular heart symptoms to keep in mind

Open valve disease in the early stages is still mild, the symptoms are often not obvious. So it is very difficult to detect the disease. Only when having a checkup does the patient know that he has an open heart valve. When the signs of open heart valve clear, the disease has progressed seriously, needing early examination and prompt treatment.

Signs of an open heart valve:

  • Difficulty breathing, this symptom increases markedly when lying down.

  • Tired.

  • Heart beat fast, palpitations.

  • Dizziness, dizziness.

  • Swelling of legs and ankles.

  • Dry cough, especially at night.

4. Causes of open heart valves

There are 2 main causes of valve leaks:

- Congenital: birth defect in the heart right from the moment of birth.

- Acquired cardiovascular diseases:

  • Heart valve disease due to post-joint, rheumatism.

  • Aging heart valve pathology: Old age, myocardial infarction, anemia.

  • Rare diseases: dilated myocardium, endocarditis, aortic aneurysm, endocarditis.

  • The heart valve is damaged, the ligaments and muscles that hold the heart valve are broken and dilated.

5. Can open-heart valve disease be cured?

Open-heart valve disease causes many health effects, if not detected early and promptly treated, it will leave many serious consequences, threatening the patient's life.

- Diagnose

Clinical examination:

  • Heart Stethoscope: An opening of the heart's valve often makes a blowing sound due to abnormal flow of blood.

  • Symptoms that the patient is suffering from.

  • Family history, pathology.

Preclinical examination:

  • ECG.

  • Chest X-ray.

  • Cardiac Doppler ultrasound.

  • Heart catheterization.

Some other subclinical tests: Magnetic resonance imaging, chest CT scanner, hematology and blood biochemistry tests, multi-series tomography ...

- How to treat open heart valve disease

Depending on the cause of the disease and the course of the disease, the doctor will prescribe the appropriate treatment for each specific patient.

Mild venting of the heart valve:

  • Drugs: Diuretics (furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, spironolactone), Digitalis, afterload reduction drugs, nitrate vasodilators, anticoagulants, beta sympathomimetic blockers ...

  • Adjust diet, living and working appropriately such as reducing salt, reducing fat, limiting alcohol, tobacco and not working too hard to live peacefully with the disease.

When using the drug, it is necessary to comply with the correct dosage and indications of the doctor. Avoid discontinuing or using other drugs as this may interfere with your treatment regimen. If any out of the ordinary occurs, follow-up visit or early consultation with your doctor.

Severe cardiomyopathy:

If the heart valve is severely damaged, there is a risk of heart failure, the doctor will prescribe intervention treatment:

  • Heart valve repair surgery: Doctors rely on a valve opening condition that interventions such as cutting or stitching the valves to close together.

  • Heart valve replacement surgery: Applied when heart valve repair surgery is ineffective. The doctor removes the heart valve and replaces it with an artificial heart valve (mechanical or biological heart valve).

6. Is heart valve opening dangerous?

To evaluate the danger of open valve heart does not depend on many factors such as: type of open valve, degree of openness, size of the heart chamber, associated diseases such as arrhythmia, hypertension, diabetes ...

Conventions on ultrasound to calculate the heart valve clearance include 4 levels: 1/4, 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4. In case the heart valve is only open from 2/4 or less, then no treatment is required, but only need to periodically re-examine and monitor. Except for cases where the heart valve is a complication of other conditions such as myocardial infarction, rheumatism, and myocardial anemia.

Heart valve open from 2/4 or more should be checked early to determine the cause to make appropriate treatment regimen. When the heart valve is 3/4 or more open, it must be actively treated and monitored closely. If the hole is from 3.5 / 4 or more, the patient must perform heart valve surgery or replace artificial heart valves.

Complications caused by severe cleft palate:

  • Heart failure.

  • Blood clot formation.

  • Heart rhythm disturbances.

  • Pulmonary hypertension.

7. How to prevent and improve valve regurgitation symptoms

  • Have a scientific lifestyle, get reasonable rest and exercise regularly.

  • Regularly check blood pressure and treat high blood pressure well.

  • No smoking, alcohol and drugs, drugs.

  • Lose weight if you are obese.

  • Balance work life to eliminate stress.

  • Avoid worrying too much as it can affect the disease.

  • Include plenty of green vegetables, fruits, and whole grains in your daily diet. Avoid processed, canned, and high-fat foods.

  • Reduce salt in your diet every day to avoid overworked heart and reduce high blood pressure.

Open valve disease is difficult to cure, but patients can reduce the dangerous complications if treated properly. In addition, it is necessary to proactively screen for heart every 6 months or once a year to detect disease early, monitor disease status and take appropriate preventive measures.

MASKED HYPERTENSION
Masked hypertension refers to a condition where a patient’s blood pressure (BP) appears normal (below 140/90 mmHg) when measured in a clinical setting but exceeds the threshold of 135/85 mmHg when measured outside the clinic, such as at home or with ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) over 24 hours. The concern with masked hypertension is that it often goes unnoticed, yet it poses significant health risks. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications such as kidney failure, vision loss, heart failure, and an increased risk of stroke.
