WHAT CONDITIONS MAY BE HIDDEN BEHIND WRIST PAIN IN OFFICE WORKERS?

Wrist pain and numbness when typing for long hours may not simply be fatigue-it can signal underlying musculoskeletal conditions. Without timely diagnosis and treatment, these issues may progress and lead to unexpected complications. Learn more with CarePlus doctors in the article below.

WHAT CONDITIONS MAY BE HIDDEN BEHIND WRIST PAIN IN OFFICE WORKERS?

💥 Do you find yourself unconsciously shaking your wrist after typing for too long?

Or occasionally rubbing your hand because of numbness in your fingertips?

🤔 Many office workers assume it is simply “hand fatigue from working too much.” However, if wrist pain recurs daily or persists for several weeks, it could be your body signaling an underlying musculoskeletal disorder.

✅ Join MSc., MD., Specialist Level I Nguyen Van Hoang Tam – Orthopedics & Traumatology at CarePlus International Clinics, as we explore the conditions that may be hidden behind wrist pain in the article below.

1️⃣ Why are office workers prone to wrist pain?

The wrist is a complex structure composed of multiple small bones, ligaments, tendons, and nerves working together in coordination. Repetitive movements-such as typing, using a mouse, scrolling on a smartphone, or keeping the wrist in a bent position for prolonged periods-can strain the wrist tendons, cause inflammation, and increase pressure on nearby nerves. Over time, this may lead to various wrist-related disorders.

Occupations commonly associated with wrist pain include:

▪️ Office staff, administrative staff, accountants

▪️ Programmers and designers

▪️ Content writers, copywriters, marketers

▪️ Data entry staff

▪️ Individuals who frequently use smartphones or tablets

2️⃣ Conditions that may be hidden behind wrist pain

Not every case of wrist pain is serious. However, if the pain lasts longer than 1–2 weeks, or is accompanied by numbness, hand weakness, or worsening pain at night, it may be a warning sign of the following conditions:

🔹 Carpal tunnel syndrome

This condition occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist, causing pain, numbness, and sometimes weakness in the hand. Carpal tunnel syndrome is considered the most common peripheral nerve compression disorder in the upper limb, especially among people who perform repetitive hand movements over long periods.

🔹 Wrist tenosynovitis

This refers to inflammation of the tendons and tendon sheaths around the wrist, often caused by overuse or repetitive movements. Patients typically experience pain when moving the wrist or gripping objects.

🔹 Early wrist osteoarthritis

Degeneration can occur in the small joints of the wrist, leading to cartilage wear, pain, swelling, and stiffness-particularly after prolonged wrist activity.

🔹 De Quervain’s syndrome

This condition involves stenosing tenosynovitis of the tendons responsible for thumb movement (the abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis) at the wrist. Patients often experience pain on the thumb side of the wrist, which worsens when moving the thumb or gripping objects.

It is important to note that these conditions often present with similar symptoms in the early stages. Self-diagnosis or relying only on temporary pain relief medications may cause you to miss the “golden window” for effective conservative treatment.

3️⃣ Early screening for timely treatment with CarePlus
