What is genetic screening and testing for genes?

In Vietnam, It’s up to 70% of cancer patients come to the hospital for treatment at a late stage. However, there are many ways to detect cancer early like screening, and testing for genetic cancer by genes is highly appreciated by many experts.

1. What is genetic cancer testing?

According to the American Cancer Society, between 5% and 10% of all cancers are related to a genetic mutation that is inherited. However, having the mutant gene does not mean you will get cancer. This just means that you have a higher risk of getting a certain type of cancer.

The test can look for many genetic mutations and predict the likelihood of cancer. This type of test is especially needed for the following subjects:

  • Family member (mother, father, grandfather, grandmother ...) or a relative who is close to cancer.

  • The family member performs genetic tests to find the mutation.

3.1. Screening for breast and ovarian cancer

Geneplus test for breast and ovarian cancer (2 genes)

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are tumor suppressor genes. If a copy of either gene is mutated in the germ cell, breast cancer syndrome and hereditary ovarian cancer (HBOC) are most likely to occur.

Statistically, mutations BRCA1 and BRCA2 cause:

  • About 25% of all breast cancers are inherited.

  • 10% of all breast cancers.

  • 15% of all ovarian cancer cases.

Cost-effective Geneplus screening package for breast and ovarian cancer focused on BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. As a result, even the smallest mutations in these 2 genes will be detected quickly.

Geneplus test for breast and ovarian cancer (26 genes)

Besides BRCA1 and BRCA2, there are also many other genetic mutations that have been linked to breast and ovarian cancers. Therefore, CarePlus offers a Geneplus test to screen for 26-gene ovarian and breast cancer to increase accuracy.

The list of genes in the examination package includes:

MASKED HYPERTENSION
Masked hypertension refers to a condition where a patient’s blood pressure (BP) appears normal (below 140/90 mmHg) when measured in a clinical setting but exceeds the threshold of 135/85 mmHg when measured outside the clinic, such as at home or with ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) over 24 hours. The concern with masked hypertension is that it often goes unnoticed, yet it poses significant health risks. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications such as kidney failure, vision loss, heart failure, and an increased risk of stroke.
