In Vietnam, about 5,000 women have cervical cancer per year, with more than 2,000 deaths. However, most cases can be detected early or prevented by routine vaccination and screening. Learn about how we can prevent cervical cancer through regular screening with Pap and HPV testing and vaccination

1. What is Cervical Cancer?

The cervix is a part of the uterus, where the vagina connect to the uterus, is covered with a thin layer of tissue consisting of many cells. The disease is caused by an abnormal, uncontrolled growth of cells in the cervix. The cells grow rapidly and create tumors in the cervix.

2. Get HPV  vaccination - reduce the risk of disease up to 90%

There are many causes of cervical cancer including more than 90% of cases detected by the HPV virus. The best prevention measure is againsting the HPV virus. In Vietnam, the HPV vaccine recommended by the vaccine manufacturer is indicated for women between the ages of 9 and 26 years, regardless of whether or not they have had sex. Experts recommend that women should get vaccinated against cervical cancer as soon as possible. The effective vaccine lasts up to 30 years. In addition, experts recommend the following:

  • Nutrition regime, scientific and healthy movement;

  • Don't have sex too early and keep healthy sex;

  • Do not abuse birth control pills;

  • Keep the vagina clean;

  • Get regular cervical cancer screening.

3. Regularly screening

Women who have previously been vaccinated HPV, screening for cervical cancer have to continue because there is no vaccine that can protect against all types of HPV. Cervical cancer screening chart:

  • Under the age of 21: screening should not be taken

  • 21 - 29 years old: screening by PAP test every 3 years

  • 30-65 years: get screening by the HPV test every 5 years or the PAP test every 3 years.

  • Over 65 years: if the result is the last 10 years, it is better to stop testing; If not, keep checking

  • Women who have had their uterus and cervix removed: stop exam

  • Women who have had a hysterectomy and have not had a cervix removed: check again
