The use of insurance for medical examination and treatment is very necessary for all subjects, especially those at high risk of diseases such as the elderly, young children, and people in poor health. Insurance offers many benefits to medical examination and treatment, of which the outstanding factor is cost savings.

1. What types of insurance are used for medical examination and treatment?

When classified by subjects, there are 3 types of insurance: property insurance, personal insurance and civil liability insurance. In which, medical examination and treatment insurance is health insurance (medical insurance), belonging to human insurance. There are 2 types of health insurance:

  • Social health insurance.

  • Commercial medical insurance.

1.1. Social health insurance: Other names: Government health insurance, public health insurance, Vietnam health insurance.

Definition: Social health insurance is defined under the Law on Vietnam Health Insurance as follows: “Health insurance is a form of insurance applied in the health care sector, not for profit, organized by the State and responsible for participating in the provisions of the Law on Insurance" This means that social health insurance that the government offers to most citizens in Vietnam. At the same time, this is one of the non-profit insurance types (non-commercial).

Social health insurance supports the payment of medical expenses through the health insurance fund

Scope of payment:

- Examination, treatment, functional rehabilitation, periodical pregnancy check-ups, childbirth.

- Screening and early diagnosis of some diseases.

-Transporting patients from the district level to the higher level in an emergency or during inpatient treatment must refer to the following subjects:

  • People with meritorious services to the revolution.
  • Persons are eligible for monthly social protection benefits according to the provisions of law.
  • Poor households, ethnic minorities living in areas with difficult or extremely difficult socio-economic conditions.
  • Children under 6 years old.
  • Near-poor households.

New points in social health insurance 2018:

  • Do not record the time of expiration.
  • Define full time for participation for 5 consecutive years.
  • The last 10 digits of the health insurance card code are the social insurance numbers.

1.2. Commercial medical insurance (Other names: Private health insurance)

Definition: Commercial health insurance is offered by private insurance companies. Accordingly, these insurance companies must obtain an establishment license and operate by the Ministry of Finance in accordance with the Law on Insurance Business. Commercial health insurance is insurance for-profit (commercial in nature).

Scope of payment: Depending on the contract content.

2. Should you choose commercial or social health insurance?

In fact, each type of insurance has its own advantages. All citizens can buy both after purchasing social health insurance. Therefore, whether to buy more commercial insurance after having social health insurance will depend on personal preferences and needs.

3. The process of applying insurance for medical examination and treatment

The process of using insurance for medical examination and treatment is quite similar among hospitals. Implementation steps include:

  • ID card or passport.
  • For children: Copy of Birth Certificate.

- Read or ask clinic/hospital staff to advise on the examination process under the direct insurance payment service.

- Signed for certification.

- Select and use the service.

- Doctors perform tests and diagnose diseases.

- The insurance department of the clinic/hospital proceeds to confirm with the insurance company.

Step 5

- Clinic/hospital receives confirmation directly from the insurance company.

- Customers sign for certification of documents related to the visit.

- The customer pays the non-guaranteed costs (if any).
