Normal vs Abnormal Vaginal Discharge

Vaginal discharge is not always clear white. In particular, some unusual colors can also be a warning sign of the risk of vaginal health infections that women should not be subjectively ignored.

Transparent color

Normal vaginal discharge will be clear or white, with a smooth or egg-white consistency. The discharge may be more abundant before ovulation, during sexual arousal, and during pregnancy.

White, cream, or light yellow

White, cream or light yellow vaginal discharge is expected, especially at the beginning or end of the menstrual cycle. However, if the mucus has a thick or cheese-like appearance, a strong odor, and signs of itching or irritation, it could signify a yeast infection. In this case, you should see your doctor for treatment.

Dark yellow or green

Mucus that is a light yellow color is usually not too problematic. However, if the discharge is dark yellow or green, you need to pay attention, as it is most likely a sign that you have a vaginal infection or a sexually transmitted disease. You should see your doctor promptly if your vaginal discharge is thick, lumpy, or has a foul odor.

Brown or blood red

Brown or bloody vaginal discharge usually occurs during or shortly after the menstrual cycle. Towards the end of the menstrual cycle, the mucus may be brown instead of red. You will also likely see blood spots between periods.

If spotting occurs during the average time of your period and you recently had unprotected sex, it could signify pregnancy.

Light to dark pink

If light to dark pink vaginal discharge occurs a few days after your period, and there are no other symptoms associated with it, this is a typical sign as this could be due to residual menstrual blood.

Grey

Gray vaginal discharge is usually a bad sign, which could be a symptom of a common bacterial infection called bacterial vaginosis (BV). BV often causes vaginal symptoms that include:

  • Itchy
  • Irritation
  • Frowst
  • Redness around the vulva or vagina
