7 diseases that can be detected with an eye exam

Your eyes are the only part of your body where your doctor can see through both nerves and blood vessels, so often some diseases can be detected first through an eye exam.

Besides eye diseases that can cause vision loss, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration, an eye exam can also reveal other health problems.

Maintaining regular eye exams at least once every 1 years not only helps to monitor eye health, but also can detect other serious diseases of the body. Consists of:

Diabetes, when not well controlled, can lead to diabetic retinopathy.

High blood pressure: If the blood vessels in the eyes narrow or begin to leak, it could be a sign of high blood pressure.

Stroke: Some symptoms can be seen on eye examination such as small gray spots in vision, blurred vision in one or both eyes, etc.

Hyperlipidemia: A gray or white ring appears around the cornea. For the elderly, it can be a sign of aging. As for young people, they may have high blood fat.

Liver damage: Yellow eyes can be a sign of liver disease due to high levels of Bilirubin (a substance made more when the liver is inflamed or damaged).

Hyperthyroidism: Protruding eyes, double vision, and loss of vision can all be signs of an overactive thyroid gland.

Macular degeneration: Characterized by small yellow deposits - due to accumulation of waste - that form under the retina. This long-term condition will prevent nutrients from reaching the retina, causing this layer of cells to die. This leads to degeneration and loss of visual function.

Cataracts: A vision condition such as being pulled by clouds; blurred vision when looking at the light of the opposite headlight when driving at night.
