Nasopharynx cancer accounts for the highest rate (10-12%) in types of head and neck cancer. It is ranked fourth among the six most popular cancers in Vietnam (stomach, liver, breast, lung, nasopharynx, and cervical cancer).
Although nasopharynx cancer is rare in the general U.S. population, it is significantly more likely to occur in Asia, especially common in southern China and Southeast Asia with a rate of 20-30/100,000. The first reason is hypothesized that to be due to genetic factors in the race. Besides, it is found that this type of cancer has been strongly linked to Virus Epstein Barr (EBV).
