Why do newborns should get the Hepatitis B & Tuberculosis vaccine at birth?

Parents often wonder why they should vaccinate their newborns against tuberculosis and hepatitis B within the first 24 hours after birth rather than later. Let's get together to find the answer from Dr. Lai Thi Bich Thuy!

Why do newborns should get the Hepatitis B & Tuberculosis vaccine at birth?

Why Should You Vaccinate Newborns Against Hepatitis B?

🔸 Vietnam has a high rate of hepatitis B infection (10-20%).

🔸 Transmission occurs when the skin or mucous membranes are damaged and come into contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person.

🔸 If a child under 1 year old contracts the virus, nearly 90% will develop chronic hepatitis, which can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.

⏰ It's best to vaccinate within 24 hours after birth to give the child an 85-90% chance of immunity against hepatitis B transmission from the mother.

⏰ If vaccinated later, the level of immunity decreases each day, and by the 7th day, it almost loses its effectiveness.

✅ The Ministry of Health recommends an additional three doses at 2, 3, and 4 months old, providing over 95% protection and immunity that lasts over 20 years.

About Tuberculosis (TB)

🔸 In Vietnam, 2 out of every 1,000 people have pulmonary TB and can infect 15-20 others.

🔸 TB is highly contagious through the respiratory tract, especially from undiagnosed and untreated patients.

🔸 TB bacteria may not cause active disease unless the immune system is weakened (especially in young children and the elderly).

🔸 Nearly 40% of children under 1 year old who contract TB will develop severe forms of the disease, such as TB meningitis and miliary TB, which have high mortality rates.

✅ In summary, early TB vaccination is crucial to protect children from the high risk of contracting the disease from those around them, especially undiagnosed individuals.
