PROACTIVELY VACCINATE AGAINST MEASLES - REDUCE THE RISK OF OUTBREAKS

Measles is an acute infectious disease caused by a virus, spreading through the respiratory tract, primarily affecting children. The most severe complications include blindness, brain swelling, diarrhea, and severe respiratory infections.

Given the complex developments of measles and whooping cough in several provinces and cities, the Ministry of Health has issued directives to strengthen the prevention and control of measles infections in medical examination and treatment facilities.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, in the first six months of 2024, there were 16 measles cases reported in four districts: District 8, Binh Tan, Hoc Mon, and Binh Chanh, with three outbreaks identified in Binh Tan District, Hoc Mon, and Binh Chanh.

Of these 16 cases, 68.8% were children under 2 years old; 93.8% were under 5 years old; and 84.6% were children aged 9 months to under 5 years old who had not been fully vaccinated. This shows that measles cases are concentrated in children under 5 years old, especially those who have not been fully vaccinated.

The best prevention for children is vaccination. Doctors recommend that receiving two doses of the measles vaccine can protect children from the disease up to 95%. Parents and caregivers should check if their children have received the recommended vaccinations below and make sure to catch up if necessary:

- 9 months old: 1 dose of single measles vaccine or measles in combination vaccine (measles-mumps-rubella).

- 12-15 months old: 1 dose of measles-rubella or measles-mumps-rubella.

- 4-6 years old: 1 dose of measles-mumps-rubella.

In case of a measles outbreak, if the child is at risk of exposure to measles, parents should take the child to a doctor as soon as possible to consider early vaccination and appropriate treatment to prevent severe complications.

Currently, CarePlus Clinic offers all types of measles vaccines and other vaccines according to the national immunization program. For any questions, please call our Free Hotline 18006116 for support and to schedule a vaccination appointment at CarePlus.
