Herpes is an infectious disease caused by herpes simplex virus. There are herpes type 1 (HSV-1 or oral herpes) and herpes type 2 (HSV-2 or genital herpes). Herpes-type 1 usually causes sores around the mouth and lips while Herpes-type 2 causes sores around the genitals or rectum.
