Cancer screening schedule after treatment

Cancer screening schedule after treatment

According to Dr. Phung Thi Phuong Chi, for successful cancer patients, the follow-up and treatment after cancer play a critical role.

1. Benefits of Screening

Prevent cancer recurrence

The goal of follow-up visits is to check for disease recurrence. Recurrence is when cancer comes back after treatment because a small area of undetected cancer cells remains in the body. These cells grow silently until detected on the test results or cause signs or symptoms.

The doctor will ask specific questions about the patient’s medical condition during the examination. It will assign some patients blood tests or imaging tests.

Managing long-term and late-effects

Most people are prepared to experience the side effects of cancer treatment, but it surprised many patients when, even though they have overcome cancer, the side effects are still lingering. These are the long-term side effects. In addition, the late side effects can appear months or even years after the treatment ends.

Talk to your doctor about the risk of long-term side effects. This risk depends on the type of cancer, your treatment plan, and your health conditions.

2. Follow-up schedule after Cancer treatment

According to the doctor’s advice, after successful cancer treatment, patients need to regularly carry out follow-up screening to be consulted by a doctor individually for each case with the following schedule:

  • Visit every 3 months for the first 2 years
  • Following 2 years visit every 6 months
  • From year 5 onwards follow up and see every year

However, the visit schedule can be changed if suitable for each individual. For example, the patient has any events or recurrence of the disease. Therefore, patients need to do different diagnoses and tests, depending on each case’s doctor’s orders.

In addition, each patient himself needs to exercise moderation and self-observation during visits to detect abnormal changes at the earliest, such as changes in the patient’s place and other organs in the patient’s life all body.
