GYNECOMASTIA IN BOYS – A COMMON SIGN THAT’S OFTEN OVERLOOKED!

👦🏻 Enlarged breasts in boys – it might sound unusual, but it’s actually quite common, especially during puberty. This condition is called gynecomastia, caused by excessive growth of breast gland tissue, making a boy’s chest appear “feminine.” In most cases, it’s benign, but it may also signal hormonal imbalances or more serious medical conditions.

🔍 Common causes of gynecomastia in boys:

✅ Natural hormonal changes:

  • Newborns: Caused by maternal estrogen exposure; usually resolves within a few weeks.
  • Puberty (ages 10–16): Temporary hormonal imbalance; often resolves on its own within 1–2 years.
  • Older age: Declining testosterone levels after age 50–60.

✅ Side effects of medications:

  • Antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, chemotherapy, or hormone-based medications.

✅ Underlying medical conditions:

  • Thyroid disorders, liver or kidney disease.
  • Pituitary, testicular, or adrenal tumors.
  • Klinefelter syndrome (a chromosomal disorder causing hormonal imbalance) or conditions related to testosterone deficiency.

✅ Lifestyle factors and habits:

  • Obesity: Body fat converts testosterone into estrogen.
  • Alcohol, marijuana, or drug use.

🚨 When should you take your child to see a doctor?

While most cases are harmless, parents should not ignore breast enlargement in boys, especially when it comes with warning signs like:

❗ Prolonged symptoms:

  • Lasts longer than 2 years during puberty.
  • Appears before age 10 or outside the typical puberty range.

❗ Unusual signs:

  • Rapid growth, asymmetry, hard lump, discharge (especially bloody), or significant pain.

❗ Systemic symptoms:

  •  Weight loss, persistent fever, fatigue, delayed puberty, small testicles, or lack of male-pattern hair growth.

❗ Family history or risk factors:

  • Family history of breast/testicular cancer or hormonal disorders.
  • Use of unregulated medications, hormones, or stimulants.

🔔 According to Dr. Lai Thi Bich Thuy (Pediatric Specialist at CarePlus):
“Gynecomastia isn’t something to be ashamed of or considered rare, but it does require parental awareness and support. Early detection and proper evaluation can help rule out serious medical conditions while providing emotional and physical support during a critical growth stage.”
